The main aim of this paper is to analyze the way of engaging with followers of other Islamic sects using concepts from contemporary epistemology of belief. This research is organized based on a descriptive-analytical method and grounded in an epistemological approach. In addition to religious tolerance, which has always been emphasized, important factors affecting our approach to others include avoiding naive realism, attention to indirect voluntarism in belief, the influence of non-doctrinal factors on belief, and an emphasis on the ethics of belief. By accepting indirect voluntarism, human beliefs are not directly under one’s will and control; therefore, empathy and flexibility should be considered when engaging with the beliefs of other sects. Also, when encountering other sects, one should not focus solely on the doctrinal aspect of the individual’s belief but must also take into account non-doctrinal factors influencing belief. This approach leads to a moderate exculpation of the interlocutor and paves the way for scholarly dialogue. At the same time, based on the ethics of belief, each individual must observe the ethical rules and duties related to their own beliefs. The possibility of interfaith dialogue and the promotion of sustainable tolerance in the contemporary world require attention to the epistemological foundations of religious belief.
